Executive Summary

Industry Context: For wireless ISPs operating fixed-wireless infrastructure, an uptime target of 99.5% or higher is the accepted industry standard, equating to ~3.6 days of cumulative downtime per year. Tier-1 carriers typically guarantee 99.99% on fibre-fed backbones; last-mile wireless segments — subject to radio propagation, weather, and power grid variability — realistically target 99.0–99.9% availability.

Dullstroom's Unique Challenges: The Dullstroom network operates at ~2,100m altitude, exposing tower infrastructure to lightning, mist, sub-zero winters, and strong winds. The area also sits on Eskom's Mpumalanga grid — subject to load-shedding and rural supply instability. Long radio links between high sites mean a single tower outage can cascade across multiple downstream sites.

Path Redundancy & True Area Availability

The Dullstroom network operates with redundant fibre breakouts via Witbank and Landini. When one path is unavailable, traffic re-routes through the alternate path — meaning a path outage does not translate to a customer-visible area outage. The analysis below isolates outages on Witbank Tower POP and Landini and computes their intersection — the only periods where the Dullstroom area truly lost Internet connectivity.
